Turkey Plays Beautiful Football, But Where Is the Striker? As I watch Turkey's World Cup match against Australia, I find myself becoming increasingly frustrated. Not because Turkey is playing badly. Quite the opposite. The Turks are combining well, moving the ball intelligently, and repeatedly finding their way into dangerous areas around the Australian penalty box. Yet time and again, something crucial is missing: a real striker. It's as if this Turkish team consists of eleven players who all enjoy participating in attacks, but nobody whose primary obsession is actually scoring goals. The pattern keeps repeating itself. A slick passing move. A clever through ball. A dangerous cross from the wing. And then... nobody. No center-forward battling between the defenders. No striker making that instinctive run to the near post. No goal-hungry predator whose only thought is getting the ball into the net. Players like Arda Güler, Kenan Yıldız, and Ferdi are undeniably talented. They can dribble, create, combine, and unlock defenses. But they are not classic number nines. They are creators, wingers, attacking midfielders, and football artists. Turkey once had players like Hakan Şükür and later Burak Yılmaz. These were strikers who lived for goals. You could barely notice them for eighty-nine minutes, but when that one opportunity arrived, they were exactly where they needed to be. Modern football sometimes seems obsessed with flexibility. Everyone rotates positions. Everyone participates in the build-up. Everyone is multifunctional. But watching this match, I cannot help wondering whether coaches have forgotten the most basic truth about the sport. Football is not ultimately about completing the prettiest passing sequence. And sometimes, to do that, you simply need an old-fashioned killer in the penalty area.
