People keep trying to rewrite history, but the documents are public.
The Confederacy officially consisted of 11 states that seceded from the Union:
โข South Carolina
โข Mississippi
โข Florida
โข Alabama
โข Georgia
โข Louisiana
โข Texas
โข Virginia
โข Arkansas
โข North Carolina
โข Tennessee
The Confederacy also CLAIMED Kentucky and Missouri.
West Virginia broke away from Virginia during the Civil War because many people in the western counties opposed Virginiaโs decision to secede from the Union in 1861.
And letโs be very clear: many of these states plainly stated WHY they were leaving the Union.
Mississippi said:
โOur position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery...โ
Texas defended โthe servitude of the African race.โ
Georgia, South Carolina, and others complained about abolitionists, Black freedom, and threats to slavery.
This wasnโt hidden. It wasnโt subtle. It was written down in their own declarations. The Civil War never ended.
And many of these same states later:
โข created Black Codes
โข enforced Jim Crow
โข fought school integration
โข resisted the Voting Rights Act
โข used terror, media, politics, and violence to suppress Black political power
History leaves patterns.
Thatโs why studying history matters โ because some of the same states still struggle with the same racial tensions and political battles today.
Read the documents for yourself. Donโt let people sanitize history to make themselves comfortable.
