Can’t make this up: Mexico is ending the school year six weeks early in order to enjoy the World Cup. 99% of those kids and their families will certainly not be going to any games but will face an educational and economic burden because of this nytimes.com/athletic/72628…

@Govt_Acct_Inst

@Jgamer13 @kenbensinger How is kids going to class keeping the machinery of capitalism grinding? Isn't hyping prices and stilumating consumption instead what keeps the machinery of capitalism working?

@kenbensinger Mexico thinks a community celebration that lasts a month is more important than keeping the machinery of capitalism grinding away at full speed during this period. The NYTimes (and its very wealthy sponsors) are offended by this dangerous precedent.

This is pathetic. No one gets anything accomplished in Latin American cultures during the World Cup. This policy just gets rid of the pretense of showing up to school so teachers and students can watch the game together. This policy will allow families to enjoy the games together as a unit and as a community.

Sci-Hub, the evil website that pirated 88M+ research papers and made them freely available has added another evil feature. If you run a DOI and open a paper, Sci-Hub can give you similar and related papers. Click on the three horizontal dots or the arrow and it will show you similar papers. Don't do it.

In my personal experience, right wing people seem to retain their curiosity, whereas left wing people simply do not. In fact, left wing folks are often vehemently incurious, are quick to dismiss, and easily triggered about anything that even mildly challenges their worldview. For example, abortion, or the climate, or vaccines, or illegals, or Trump. The Left has even gone so far as to support mass censorship, men becoming women, mandating injections, eliminating people from society, allowing mass mail in fraudulent ballots, letting grown predatory men use girls bathrooms, among many others. It seems to me that it's the Left that has "homicidal incuriosity."

Dear @sapinker, I am a huge admirer of your cognitive/linguistic work and your influential efforts in popularizing the evolutionary psychological lens. But I'm afraid that you may have missed the key tenets of suicidal empathy. It has nothing to do with "right-wing contempt for empathy." Empathy is an evolutionarily selected trait for a social species to exhibit. But as is the case for countless psychiatric disorders, an adaptive trait can become maladaptive if it misfires. Suicidal empathy is the maladaptive misfiring of empathy in three key ways: 1) it is hyperactive; 2) it is activated in wrong situations; 3) it is directed toward the wrong targets. What I just wrote holds true irrespective of whether you support Trump or not. I hope this clarifies it for you.
Steven Pinker@sapinker

I discussed the limits of empathy in The Better Angels of Our Nature, but it's still a powerful force in the decline of violence and expansion of well-being, and I find the new right-wing contempt for empathy ("toxic empathy," "suicidal empathy") contemptible. With a presidential administration that delights in cruelty and callousness, an excess of empathy is the least of our problems.

Honored to have written a foreword alongside @ArchCordileone for this important new book. My argument in a nutshell: “Postliberalism failed for a reason more fundamental than bad politics or bad history. It failed because it lacks an adequate account of human nature and civil society.” The postliberals claim the classical tradition — Aristotle, Aquinas, natural law — but quietly drop its most fundamental tenet: the family is prior to the state. The polis exists to serve the household. Not the other way around. Why Postliberalism Failed by @McGillPatterson and @ThomasDHowes

♰ 3 May ♰ Today we commemorate Blessed Patriarch Estephan Doueihy, the man who kept the Maronite nation alive. Hunted by the Ottomans, he wrote 30+ books in exile, preserving our history, our liturgy, our identity. A saint of the pen and of the mountain. ♰ Read his story & download some of his books for free 👇 christianlebanon.com/editorial/the-…

@Converted84 No, if it was one of the pre-Paul VI liturgies I would have said so. But thank you so much, nevertheless, for trying your best to mansplain / convertsplain to me about things I have been knowledgeable about since I was a preteen girl.

Today I attended a Solemn High Mass in Latin at the Jesuits' flagship church in London, Immaculate Conception, better known as Farm Street Church. This church, which opened its doors in 1849, famously welcomed many converts to the Roman communion during the great Catholic revival in Victorian England -- which interests me greatly, of course, as my next book's subject, Lady Mary Elizabeth Herbert, played her own important role in that revival.
