Interesting, I ran across this quote from Henri Nouwen: "A Christianity without empathy is nothing but an empty religion. The heart of the Gospel is to love your neighbor as yourself, to rejoice with those who rejoice, and to weep with those who weep." #empathy ~ "The Return of the Prodigal Son."

A salute to all the parents out there watching wall-to-wall Peppa Pig as world events unfold. Let me know if any more unprecedented events happen this morning.

Told my wife that I was excited to take the day off. She pointed out I was sitting at my computer surrounded by a stack of work-related books. Trying again with a novel & Netflix fire.

If reading the Bible is simply a task of Christian worship then this is a perfectly understandable take to send to your 2 million followers. But if, in fact, reading the Bible is a conversation in order to better know God, then it is a tragic mistake.

@SusanWiseBauer Yes! I’ve had the same. All over-the-top flattery and long AI “reviews”.

So in the past couple of weeks I have gotten a SCORE of pitches from a dozen book publicity companies, all hoping for my business. Each email highlights a particularly book of mine and tells me exactly what's so great about it. I've never seen such specific, carefully written, personalized pitches in my life. All AI. If I ask ChatGPT to describe any one of my books, that's exactly what I get. If you want my business, show that you understand something about my work that can only be gleaned by, oh, I don't know, READING IT.

A pastor who doesn’t love people who disagree with them theologically, politically, or culturally is no true pastor.

It was a good holiday for writing! 4,000 words on the book project, a sermon on James started, and a two-page college lecture written.

There are worse things to do than study (historical) theology honestly. #thankful

@DanielRHyde @jasonkovacs For sure! When Facebook announced they were deleting old live videos, I first wondered if I should download my first several years of sermons from when we streamed them years ago. Then I realized it was a blessing!

@jasonkovacs Thankfully all my sermons from like 2000-2005 or so were recorded on tapes and tossed into the recycling bin!

Last year a friend committed to listening to all of Tim Keller’s sermons starting in 1989. He's now a few years in. He told me the early years were a slog—scattered and less structured. Then around ‘91, it’s like someone told him: “Keep your sermons to 3 points. Tell them what you’re going to say, say it, then tell them what you said.” And it clicked. I find this very encouraging and incredibly fascinating.

I’d love to know how often #sbc seminary professors have to sign off on their agreement of the #BFM? Anyone know? #sbc

It’s official! Signed the contract for another book this week! It will explore the history of personal Bible study and how it came to be the primary spiritual discipline. Releasing October of 2026.
