@dankimball I'd love to hear your sermon, Dan. Accessible somewhere?

Gave the Commencement message at today’s Western Seminary graduation ceremony in Portland today. It was really powerful seeing all the graduates who have given up so much time and funds to learn theology and Bible to be a positive representative of Jesus in their world. The message was a reminder to never get so consumed with church and internal Christian things that we lose touch with the people who need to hear about Jesus the most outside of our normal circles. I was once challenged by someone saying how ironic it is that the longer we are Christian and we are being changed and growing - the less we have relationships with those who aren’t in church circles. May it never be. @westernseminary

@MichaelPechar Haha! Every time a cowbell rings in church, another southern angel gets its wings.

@gavin_adams I bought it @gavin_adams and already reading it. I keep thinking, "Where has this book been for the past few years?" 😂 So insightful and practical. Thanks Gavin.

@lukedsimmons These questions are great, Luke! I'm curious about your strategy for question #1. Why have the pathway for a 1st-time guest land at a "committed volunteer" vs a small group?

Want your church to grow in 2024? Create written plans for these 3 questions: 1. How will somebody move from being a 1st time guest to a committed volunteer? 2. What can we eliminate that makes people hesitant to invite friends? 3. How will I pursue growth? (as a lead pastor)

@MichaelPechar Ha! I guess this means update + message . . . still out on "time." 🤔 😆

@lukedsimmons Gotcha. Our team has been wrestling with this & we believe Sunday am service fosters a level 2 relationship. We're organizing block parties & all-church social events that we believe are level 1-2 while we simultaneously double down on small groups that we believe are level 3.

@markriggins I don’t think it’s our role to do so. We create environments for #3 and people choose whether to take it to #2 or #1.

Joe Myers first showed me the "4 spaces of belonging": 1. Public: know you're there 2. Social: know your name 3. Personal: know your business 4. Intimate: know your secrets All matter. All are needed. None are superior. Christians typically overvalue #3-4 and undervalue #1-2.

@markriggins Yeah, I think we oversell #3-4 and undersell #1-2. When understood appropriately, 1-2 are great. But if one expects 3-4 and gets 1-2, it's a disappointment.

@MattBeard @lukedsimmons "Organizing angle" = love that phraseology. I often called it the "through thread" tying the sermon together. Often emerges unexpectedly like a whale from beneath the ocean: unmistakable. 🐋

@lukedsimmons You’re the second person to mention organization! I think for me it has to be A and D that are hardest to leave out. When I was younger, A was harder to leave out. Now that I’m older, it’s D that’s harder. Great question!

Preacher friends, what’s the hardest part of sermon prep for you? For me, the hardest part is figuring out what to leave out of the sermon… and it’s not even close.

@steveryancarter Thanks, Steve. Oddly, though we don't know each other, I immediately felt a connection to you after reading this post. My Dad died 9 yrs ago. I still feel the void (sometimes a tinge of guilt for "moving on"). I enjoy telling ppl about him in honoring ways & stories to my kids.

4 years ago, my dad passed. For those who have experienced loss, how do you honor the life, legacy, the person or loss years later? It feels like yesterday, the void is still felt deeply… Would love to learn from you all, still trying to find healthy ways to honor my dad well.
