A man was brought to the Prophet ﷺ for drinking wine. The Prophet said, “Strike him.” Some of us struck him with our hands, others with their shoes, and others with their shirts twisted into a lash. When we finished, someone said to him, “May Allah disgrace you!” The Prophet said, “Do not speak like this. Do not help Satan against him.” Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6777 Shaykh al Islam Ibn Taymiyyah commented, “Know that there is no contradiction between punishing a person in this world for his sin and praying over him and seeking forgiveness for him. The adulterer, the thief, the drinker of wine, and other sinners are subject to prescribed punishments, yet along with that they are treated with kindness through supplication for the well-being of their religion and worldly life. Verily, the prescribed punishments in the Law were only legislated as a mercy from Allah toward His servants. They proceed from the mercy of Allah and His will to show beneficence toward them. For this reason, whoever punishes people for sins should intend by that to show beneficence to them and mercy toward them, just as a father intends to discipline his child and just as a doctor intends to treat the sick.” Source: Minhāj al-Sunnah 5/237
