Here’s my take, while in the Mario movie it feels like Brie Larson is the only one genuinely passionate about it (and also Jack Black I suppose) In the Sonic movies the director, the producers, the writers, and the whole cast are passionate about it, and that’s the difference

Sonic 3 feels more like a Sonic Adventure 2 movie than The Super Mario Galaxy Movie feels like a Super Mario Galaxy movie. I think the only reason people say the Mario movies are "more faithful" is because of references and OST, but is that really enough to be "more faithful"?
