I was on a cruise in that area in November. Even without recent events, Mexico is just very troubled and violent and there are cartels in the Yucatan, too. So I did no shore excursions, just walked around the port area for a bit and then went back to the ship. If you go, stay local, don't go into isolated areas, and don't go out at night. If you're at a resort, best to just stay there.
Btw, given the spread of flesh-eating screwworm in Mexico including the Yucatan, you should educate yourself about it, and use preventative measures like bug repellant. Lots of info online about it. It mostly affects livestock but humans can get it, too.
