The ex-refinery price of imported petrol actually decreased by Rs 3.14 per litre. But the govt increased freight charges against that and increased the tax levy by Rs 27 to increase the price of petrol by Rs 27 per litre. This is even though the prime minister had made a promise 18 days back to not increase petrol taxes for a month. So much for that speech. Ex refinery diesel prices decreased by Rs 3.44 per litre. But here the govt increased freight changes to an unprecedented Rs 37 per litre to pay PSO and ensure that diesel also became expensive by Rs 27 per litre. Again they aren’t changing the old formula which has now become dysfunctional and not reducing huge margins earned by oil refineries. They need to pay refineries based not on the cost of refined imported diesel but on the cost of imported crude refined into diesel in Pakistan (which is the case for 70% of our diesel).
