@LegoKingo Wish-Nikki isn’t the villain… even in universe, her entire existence is completely based on Bears desire for her to love her, and in that respect, all she is capable of, is loving and being obsessed with Bear. It’s literally not her fault.

There are a lot of people saying stuff like "Nikki isn't the villain in Obsession," and they're talking about pre-wish Nikki, who doesn't actually do anything. It'd be more courageous to say that Wish-Nikki isn't the villain lol

@RutgerHauser She pushes his lifeless body away because after everything she has put him through she’s completely disgusted by him and probably fucking hates him. She wasn’t just “looking away” during sex, she was practically catatonic

I was not overwhelmed by it. I didn't consider it bad, just mediocre. I didn't like the ending. She pushes his lifeless body from herself and I didn't understand exactly why. I also didn't understand why she was looking away during sex. This is an interesting take on it.

"Obsession" is the umpteenth horror movie where the man dies at the end just for “living - and loving - while male.” I finally watched it and, as I predicted, I didn't like it at all. This is what I saw: Nerdy beta guy ironically named “Bear,” longs to be loved by Nikki. Nikki tells him she lost her crystal necklace, so he gallantly goes to buy her a new one. Instead, he sees the "One Wish Willow" and buys it as a joke. He meets up with friends and Nikki. When it’s time to go home he offers Nikki a ride, she says yes. They bond during the car ride. At dropoff, she asks him if he likes her and because he’s a wuss, he doesn’t admit it. Then, because he thinks the willow is a gag, he innocently wishes Nikki loved him more than anyone else in the world. Nothing evil, nothing toxic, just a simple wish for love. And because he did that, Nikki goes crazy. When she starts loving him, the film frames Bear as the true monster who "stole her agency." When they make love, it shot like he’s raping her. He's depicted as the insecure, cowardly "nice guy" who couldn't handle rejection, so he cheated reality to get what he wanted, and then let the horror play out because it felt good to finally be loved. And to break the spell, he has to kill himself at the end. All because he made a wish he didn’t believe would actually come true. This is Hollywood's most disgusting trick: MAKE EVERY MALE CHARACTER A VILLAIN WHO NEEDS TO DIE. Because the writer could’ve given us a story where the horror exists separate from the man’s actions. He could have told a story where both survive and live happily ever after. But because it’s modern-day Hollywood, we get this anti-male BS over and over again. And needless to say, the film ends before THE WOMAN pays for her crimes. And the saddest thing is: Critics I respect don't even see this, and are cheering on the creation of more misandrist trash like this. My rating: ZERO STARS.

@ManUMinute @icanbeaphantom She shot Ian on the fly for interrupting them. She smashed Sarah’s face in with a brick for being a threat to their relationship. Again, are you really that dense?

mind you, he gets his main female character to shit herself and beat another girl with a brick despite setting up a perfect way to have ian threaten the nikki/bear relationship and have her beat him with a brick within the text of the movie…

No, OBSESSION is not a misogynistic film. Y'all just can't engage with disquieting, adult subject material in a film that doesn't hold your hand or let's itself be as messy and human as it can be.

So I watched Obsession a second time, and I’ve come to the conclusion that Bear almost certainly knew the wish worked after the dinner scene. So… yeah, that was definitely rape.

Am I really the only one who saw #Euphoria for what it was? It’s not a show about giving hope to addicts, it’s literally always been a show about abuse. Point blank. People who abuse sex, drugs, and their loved ones, and how dark and horrible shit can really get.

@mordecaiwright I’ll say what I’ve been saying: the movie is not about Nicky having BPD, but, whether intentional or not, she is absolutely BPD- coded

Ppl internalizing the film as ABOUT having a BPD girlfriend is really frightening and bizarre bc it allows the young men who are watching it to ignore the fact that they are watching a r*pe and humiliation movie. My theater had teen boys in it who all saw her as the monster.

I genuinely think a lot of people went into this movie thinking it was like a slasher about a psychotic girlfriend who goes on a killing spree and not a psychological thriller about a girl who loses her autonomy to a guy who wants to fuck her

@urbanmyths @USummonings @targjinx And he chickens out. He was trying to make himself puke at the exact moment that Wish Nicky makes her own wish. If she had done it just a min sooner or later, they’d have both been trapped and probably died of dehydration, exhaustion, or starvation while having never-ended sex

Movies, politics, life.
Any sympathy for Bear ends at the party when Nikki is hitting herself in the head with a block and bleeding all over the place. And what does Bear do? He just sits there. His best friend Ian is screaming for him to get up and calling him an asshole. And after Sarah is killed right in front of him, what does he do? He helps Nikki dispose of the body. Bear doesn't have a spine or a moral compass. Only in the end when it's too painful for him does he do the right thing.

I just finished Obsession and I walked out of the theater feeling so bad for Nikki. Like I actually teared up when she came back to herself and was crying at the end. Bear deserves the absolute worst. The way he was wondering what was so bad about being with him when she asked-

@leni_kotik @AbramvNik That’s what people I think are getting wrong. It’s not a demon or entity, I believe the wish essentially created a new “consciousness” or personality. Less possession, more “Jekyl and Hyde”

На самом деле самым страшным в Обсессии была постельная сцена, которая по сути являлась насилием. Этот пустой взгляд принадлежал Никки, а голос – той одержимой сущности. Ужасно.

@culkinco I’m convinced that the people hating on Obsession somehow got the wrong idea and thought this movie was about a psycho girlfriend who goes on a killing spree and not a deeply psychology horror about a woman who loses her own autonomy. Which tbf, I blame that on the trailer

@BakerOfScones @iycrtylph You just described what it’s like to be with someone who has BPD, and literally everyone who either has BPD or has been with someone who has BPD, will tell you Nicky was BPD-coded af. This movie is practically “BPD: a horror movie”

@iycrtylph I agree and also felt like there was no narrative reason a lot of things happened. Nikki’s outbursts never felt like they were the narratively justified result of the obsession, but were instead impulsive unhinged moments with no particular explanation

Obsession is a pretty undercooked movie in basic narrative terms like "How much time has passed between events?" and "Why is that person taking this action now?" that is strangely charmless, sexless, & lacking in introspection

@witchfingersss @punishednuz I’m genuinely not trying to be a contrarian or anything like that, I just don’t think it’s fair to automatically accuse a guy of actually raping a woman if he didn’t actually realize there was no consent, which is a legit possibility in certain cases

@pakson2012 @punishednuz I see you pointing out fringe cases here, which may occasionally be applicable. Thank you for keeping an open mind and a learning mentality:)

in hindsight it's cool that they spammed this moment in marketing as a "whoa she's so crazyyy" hook but in the film, the most shocking part of this scene is right after when nikki outright asks bear if her lie is gonna be a problem for him and he says NO
Carnival of Horror@HorrorCarnival

Obsession (2026) What makes the scene so unsettling is that it’s the first time Bear questions the fantasy version of Nikki created by the wish. The moment he doubts her story, her behavior unravels — and many viewers see it as the point where the film shifts into full psychological horror.

@voutarde @monolilium For the record, I don’t think it’s a “demon” per se, as much as a whole new “person” created by the wish, like a split psyche, whose entire purpose in existence is to love Bear more than anything in the whole world.
