Amber Lee Hughes has asked the Johannesburg High Court for mercy during sentencing after being convicted of the premeditated murder and rape of four-year-old Nada-Jane Challita. The court previously heard the child was drowned in a bathtub filled with cold water in 2023. Hughes told the court she “snapped” after discovering Nada’s father had been unfaithful and claimed she believed the child was better off dead than left in his care. A social worker testified that Hughes had early childhood trauma, was diagnosed with PTSD and struggled to manage anger with borderline personality disorder said to have contributed to the crimes. Sentencing proceedings are continuing.
