@RutgersAltRoute A5: I mentioned this in a previous answer, but please allow your students to revise incorrect answers on their exams and give class time for misunderstood concepts! School is not just about report cards and grades, spread positive learning!
English

This morning's 5th and final Q is on assessment #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset
“You can enhance or destroy students’ desire to succeed in school more quickly and permanently through your use of assessment than with any other tool you have at your disposal.” – Dr. Rick Stiggins

English

@RutgersAltRoute A4: Here is some great advice I’ve read! Do not praise your students for “how clever they are” because it will encourage them to develop a fixed mindset. Instead, give them positive feedback on their hard work and the process it took to achieve what they’ve done.
English

Feedback is a compass for improvement and not all feedback is created equally. For Q4 share your content area and consider your best practices and those you would like to try #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset

English

@RutgersAltRoute A3: Create an engaging learning environment for students, one where they are eager to come to class and learn new things.
English

Framing, or how teachers introduce new concepts and tasks to students, is the focus of Q3. Framing can steer students to a fixed or growth mindset. It helps students feel free to be a work in progress as they learn. #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset

English

@RutgersAltRoute A2: also, this is going to be controversial so I’d love to hear what you think - teachers remove public shaming systems from your walls like the “clip” system or “recess jail”! This does not foster growth, it just humiliates students. There are other ways!!
English

For Q2, consider the expectations you communicate to students (verbal and nonverbal) through your classroom climate, course material & response opportunities #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset
Tip: Be specific to your content & connect with others using a # like #ArtsEd #litchat #scichat

English

@RutgersAltRoute A2: Feedback feedback feedback! Provide feedback, allow your students to learn from their mistakes so they can better themselves. Allow them to correct questions they got wrong on their exams, give them class time to discuss what went wrong and how to improve.
English

@RutgersAltRoute The challenge begins at the start of the school year - how do we change the students’ perception and attitude of learning? As teachers we have the opportunity to help our students understand that intelligence and talent are not fixed traits. We help them grow.
English

Teachers have the power to influence the mindset of students.
As you answer #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset Question 1, consider your own experience, readings, and what Carol Dweck refers to as the power of “yet” (youtu.be/hiiEeMN7vbQ?si…)

@RutgersAltRoute A5: we definitely need more training on how to read and understand IEP and 504 plans. Also professional development days for modification/accommodation strategies.
English

For our final question (Q5) consider your classroom AND school-wide behavior management and discipline policies. #TeacherEd #SpecialEd

English

@RutgersAltRoute A4: By consistently reminding them that they are no lesser than their peers, and that they deserve the same opportunities to achieve success no matter the modifications. They are equally smart, talented and worthy.
English

Teachers play a role in helping students learn and practice self-awareness skills and communicate their understanding.
For Q4 think about what you’ve done or ideas you’d like to implement to help students be self-advocates, agents of their own success #TeacherEd #SpecialEd

English

@RutgersAltRoute A3: by providing the appropriate accommodations and modifications in order to grant each and every student an equal opportunity to learn. I present all my lessons in different modes that help engage students with all types of backgrounds and disabilities.
English

For Q3 be specific content area & how you support student success, for example, your classroom environment, assignments, and assessments #TeacherEd #SpecialEd
Tip: To connect with our teachers in your subject area, use the # for your content area, i.e #arted #mathchat #scichat

English

@RutgersAltRoute A2: as many others have said, fidgets have been a life saver. Also I want to mention this one example for those who have students that have a reaction to certain sounds, I switched my students from pencil to erasable pens because they hated the sound of the pencil.
English

Dr. Jonas Bromberg & teacher Jon Weinberger discuss classroom strategies to support students with ADHD (youtube.com/watch?v=Dd62-e…) like providing fidget tools and offering checklists.
For Question 2 (Q2) consider what's worked or ideas you want to try #TeacherEd #SpecialEd

English

@RutgersAltRoute A1: one of the challenges that I’ve faced is being able to manage a classroom that has students at various levels, including students with learning disabilities. Those students, however, have granted me the opportunity to learn more about myself as an educator than ever before.
English

For Question 1 (Q1), reflect on your experience and current practices for creating an inclusive learning environment for students with learning disabilities. #TeacherEd #SpecialEd

English

@RutgersAltRoute Encouraging communication is the most important thing that I can think of. Often times students will stay silent about their harassment in school. Creating a safe space for them to talk is important #teachered
English

It's time for our 5th and final question for this #TeacherEd #SafeSchools chat. Think about the social and emotional needs of those involved in bullying to answer Q5. Students can bully others, they can be bullied, or they may witness bullying.

English

@RutgersAltRoute Growing up in an environment where I was the center of this type of treatment has really geared me up to protect my students. Our trainings have taught me to be conscious and aware of the conversations around me that the students are engaging in. #teachered
English

For Q4, reflect on your understanding of harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB) gained through professional development training, readings, and personal experiences. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools

English

@RutgersAltRoute Always keeping parents in the loop is important. I often share general updates or information about any conflict that arises via the use of tech. #teachered
English

During last month's #EdTech chat, we discussed technology for collaboration. For Q3, share your high-tech and low-tech practices for collaborating with colleagues and students' families in support of a safe learning environment for all students #TeacherEd #SafeSchools

English

@RutgersAltRoute Being a culturally aware teacher, reinforcing rules regarding respect, creating connections between your students. #teachered
English

For Question 2 (Q2) reflect on your professional experience and the materials you've read. Consider the in-person and virtual learning environments #TeacherEd #SafeSchools

English

@RutgersAltRoute Two of our classroom rules focus on respecting teachers and respecting our peers around us. We have many different cultures in my classroom, I spend some time appreciating all of them so all students feel equally important. #teachered
English

Let's get started with Question 1 (Q1) #TeacherEd #SafeSchools
When considering your "practices", you can think about:
- class rules,
- physical space of the classroom,
- learning strategies and tools you use, and
- the social and emotional skills you teach

@RutgersAltRoute Technology in the form of translators has been extremely helpful for me as an ESL teacher in order to engage patents. Programs like Google translate where you can drop a whole doc into it to be translated, and also Microsoft translator for languages that Google might not have.
English

For Question 4, we want to hear your ideas for engaging families. Note if anything is specific to the grade level(s) & the subject(s) you teach that help you connect students’ out-of-school learning & lives to form partnerships with their families. #TeacherEd #EdTech
