@MJ18912000 @reading_league @FaithBorkowsky @DTWillingham As a cognitive scientist, I would characterize background knowledge and skill differently than what Shannahan has done. Knowledge and skill are differentiated in the memory literature with knowledge here roughly equivalent to declarative memory, which is explicit...

Twitter needs a "blue check" for people who've actually taught children to read - consistently and across demographics. That'd help people understand if they're listening to a theorist, successful practitioner, or somebody who's full of it.

@ehanford Assessing a student’s writing about a specific, well-studied topic is a better indicator of comprehension, language knowledge, and use.

An article worth reading: "The conclusion that comprehension tests are an invalid assessment of reading comprehension begs the question: how can we measure it? It would seem that we can’t. There is just too much going in in the brain.." thereadingape.com/single-post/20…

“In recent years, a growing number of experts, advocates and parents have argued that educators are often too quick to blame poor reading outcomes on families, particularly low-income ones, overlooking schools’ complicity in perpetuating unequal access.” washingtonpost.com/education/2022…

@ChaseJYoung1 Levels & grades are human constructs-useful in characterizing products like texts. If we are measuring a complex cognitive process like reading, we should be measuring those essential processes. Like word recognition & its subskills and vocabulary/knowledge.

The elephant in the room. Popular SoR says leveled texts and instruction are out. But, they say kids need to read at grade level expectations. So, um, how is that not a level? Psychometrics of DIBELS (and others) is validated by norm reference to age/grade. I'm confused. Help?

Teachers who disagreed with the letter Hechinger published in response to "Sold A Story" might want to reach out to @calliepatton and have a look at the response from a teacher's perspective, and consider signing on. From the perspective of this non-teacher it's right on point.
