the knowledge gap between software engineers right now is insanely wide some devs are writing every single line of code by hand, understanding evey single thing others are shipping everything using AI, by just prompting and bearly touching the code who do you think will win ??

@Console_buche @Kmront C’est ça. Moi dis toi je préfère coder par moi même et faire du LLMs un support juste pour une question d’architecture ou sur de la syntaxe que j’ai oublier etc.. C’est vraiment un helper c’est tout. Si je laisse l’IA coder, c’est pr faire un prototype que je vais jeter anyway

@techniksecrete @Kmront Je suis totalement d'accord. Je fais pas mon anti-ai, au contraire j'en use et abuse. Mais c'est pas exclusif, et c'est absolument necessaire de comprendre ce que ton ai te fait. Sinon on travaille derriere un ecran de fumee

Dans tout ce noise que fait l'IA, rendez-vous service: ouvrez donc Twitch et regardez des gens coder a l'ancienne, sans IA, reflechir a voix haute et faire des trucs trop cools. Bordel que ca fait plaisir a voir.

@Kmront @Console_buche C’est même nécessaire. Tu dois être compétent pour travailler et pour cela, tu dois comprendre ce que tu fais donc coder, programmer, réfléchir à l’architecture, faire un projet du début à la fin est fondamentale

@unclebobmartin @justfly1984 @wookash_podcast I don’t know, if your code is garbage you’ll need to modify it by hand so it doesn’t count as a productivity win, but yeah if you really do that, it could be fine. Maybe a video of you coding with that workflow could be interesting Robert, and thank you for your response.

The issue is not whether to review, it is _what_ to review. If I can review the semantics and structure of the system without looking at the code, then that's a productivity win. This is the same bargain we've made with compilers. We don't review the binary that they produce.

To people who are *good* at reviewing code (or claim to be hehe) - how is that possible? To what extend you can properly review the code with low familiarity with the codebase? Eg. New project, you jump in, Claude Code PR - 500 lines changed - review now What's the strategy?

@justfly1984 @unclebobmartin @wookash_podcast I don’t have any doubt about that, that’s why his response shocked me : we mustn’t trust AI without review, or even trust LLM at all bcz of all the garbage it does to a source code so on and so forth… But now I understand better his take I think.

@techniksecrete @unclebobmartin @wookash_podcast He is already woke up, and embraced new powers which non-deterministic approach gives you in addition to deterministic. He found the balance between both, and mastered new skills on top of decades of practice experience in low level and higher level programming languages.

@folaoftech It has everything to do with coding : solving problem passes through programming, it’s the language, the expression of creativity and the translator in the digital world we live in, I disagree partially with that although yes, it’s a part of the job, but an important one

True enough. The question is what syntax we will use going forward. The history of programming is a ladder of progressively upgrading that syntax to ever more human language. Nowadays the syntax I use with AIs is gherkin. Sets of Given/When/Then triplets that define the FSM of the application and deeply constrain the behavior implemented by the AI. Then I use a number of tools and metics that insure that the structure of the underlying code is sound.

@unclebobmartin @wookash_podcast And most importantly what we called AI code slop, a lot of lines of code that could be reduce to a few lines etc… I persist that you need good understanding and manually writing code with an assistance from AI. LLMs tends to make a pretty difficult workflow with reviews

@techniksecrete @wookash_podcast I agree that we need serious software engineering. I am of the opinion that serious software engineering has nothing to do with language syntax. Using an AI I focus on the structure of the program not the syntax of the lines of code.

I don’t review code written by agents. I measure things like test coverage, dependency structure, cyclomatic complexity, module sizes, mutation testing, etc. Much can be inferred about the quality of the code from those metrics. The code itself I leave to the AI. Humans are slow at code. To get productivity we humans need to disengage from code and manage from a higher level.

@mseg82 It’s not about been bias about this like it’s not happening. It’s the reality we live in right now. Gradually, we accepting and making adjustments accordingly.

Software engineering has shifted. I unconsciously started accepting Claude code changes without deeply checking. Unlike before.

@dsampaolo L'ère de la fin des LLMs est peut-être très proche. Dans tous les cas, on les utilisera plus, ou surtout plus du tout comme on les utilise aujourd'hui. Ca servira pour du brainstorming et du debugging intelligent dans les IDE (meilleur utilisation pr moi).

C'est du marketing : ce mec est la pour vendre du token. Dans le monde réel, les modèles s'embourbent, ajoutent des fallback inutiles, et finissent par dire "tu mets le doigt sur les limites" quand tu leur mets le nez dans la merde. On est loin d'être à la retraite.
