The idea of "dependency injection" itself wasn't a problem on its own, you just want to pass in re-configurable behavior through the constructor of a class so that it's possible to have alternative valid implementations (common example, "current time"). But it doesn't solve creating an overly complex network of transitive dependencies between classes, in fact it sweeps this problem under a rug by making it trivial to do. Another issue arising from DI is people wanting to extract every bit of implementation as a class and an interface "to be able to change it", even when there really is only one possible valid solution, and everything else would be a bug. Instead you have people creating "a repository and a usecase" where you could have just written 1 function and that's it. Want to reconfigure it (because you actually need to)? Use a functional interface. Ever since coming the term "SRP" (single responsibility principle), plenty devs with less experience firmly believe that a class should do "1 thing" and so it has "1 reason to change", not realizing they are changing 9 other tightly coupled classes spread across 3-5 other modules to change said "1 thing". Why? Because it was 1 responsibility split into 9 other classes split across 3-5 other modules. Then you wonder why changing 1 thing takes 3 business days. This ended up as a long post, but the problem wasn't dependency injection alone, it just mitigates the symptoms of bad design. But sadly, so many people copied "bad design" that it's now seen as "normal design".
