People need to stop treating reading as fandom. If you like a book, take note so you can pick up the author’s next book if it appeals. But you need to stop getting ATTACHED to authors. This parasocial style of media interaction is crippling your ability to engage with fiction.

honestly i'm this close to quitting reading for good. every single author i actually love turns out to be problematic or worse. i'm so tired of finding out after i already got attached. feels like i can't enjoy anything anymore without a background check first

I will not mince words: the current trajectory of this discussion surrounding RF Kuang crosses directly into Anti-Semitism. As a proud Jewish author who weaves cultural esotericism into my work, watching a literary space advocate for the boycott of an entire country and culture is chilling. it is not antisemitic to condemn colonialism and violations of basic human rights. it is not antisemitic to criticize authors for validating the existence of a colonial state in a fictional book where it was entirely optional to do so.

israel has a history of colonialism backed by Western powers to simultaneously use and be used to control west asia and expand their territory under the guise of religion. over and over theyve talked of retaliation (Res194, Iron Wall) while destroying even Palestinian Jews.
