While I can appreciate the “time” issue, at the same time the dude told you 2 days ago everything was fine. You obviously didn’t say that night “ok, but if you want to leave go ahead and do it, but we’ll drop $1m from the buyout.” So sometime between Tuesday night and the official announcement, his side told you he was leaving. Tell him “Cool, here’s our account # for the $5m”.
