Valve has explained why its new Steam Machine is so expensive after players criticized the price. The entry-level model starts at around €1,000, while higher-end versions with more storage cost up to €1,500 and Valve says no discounts are planned. According to Valve, keeping the price high helps support an open and sustainable PC gaming ecosystem over the long term. The company also says that users with compatible hardware can install the same operating system on their own PCs. For those who find the Steam Machine too expensive, Valve suggests either building a PC themselves or buying a traditional game console.

bruhhh let's even forget about muhh DIY. It didn't even take me 5 minutes to find a prebuilt gaming PC cheaper than the Steam machine and would absolutely curb stomp it. What utter garbage this thing is.

@revenant_MMXX Hey retard: PC builders are obviously not the target demographic for the Steam Machine. It’s clearly just to be the lowest thought required barrier of entry for like, your granddad, and Steam has always had a higher barrier of entry price wise. It will be fine.

The Steam Machine, at $1049, is a bit too expensive to take on the PS5 or the Xbox Series X. But even at that seemingly high price, it’s still one of the cheapest and almost certainly the easiest way to get into PC gaming right now. Our review: bit.ly/4uNi025 #IGNSummerOfGaming
