One thing you have to understand is that “state visits” are not initiated by the monarch. They are initiated by the government of the day, which basically instructs the king to “invite” the leader of so-and-so country for a mega ego-massage at the UK taxpayer’s expense. the queen & the king probably loathed some of the people they had to wine & dine, but “diplomacy” said they had to.
