The last car we bought was a @Tesla Model Y. Painless purchase process. No salespeople, no showroom, no upsells, no games, no haggling, no pressure. Just a personal choice on my own time, and a simple few-minute process handled entirely via a clear and straightforward app. The next car we're buying is from another brand. And holy hell, it feels like I'm going back in time. Salespeople, back-and-forth charades, pricing games, "when can you come in?" before the deal is finalized tactics, etc. And I'm still doing it all via email so I don't have to deal with the showroom antics. I've modernized the process as much as I can from my side, and yet it's the same old same old. They don't even feel like the same thing. In one case I'm buying a car with all the baggage that comes with buying a car. In the other case I'm buying a Tesla with none of the baggage of buying a car. This experience could make me lament this other brand, but what it really does is make me appreciate and respect the lengths to which Tesla has fully reconfigured the car buying experience. It's become effortless, like buying any other product. As it should be. A car is just another product. Bravo.

@jasonfried @Tesla Had exactly the same experience buying a Lexus. Even told them up front: I'm only buying this car if I can be out the door in half an hour. "Sure, no problem". Still took nearly three hours. Tesla is just in another league.

I loathe buying cars from any dealer. I’ve tried so many ways to make “normal” car buying not take 3hrs yet somehow, some way, it always does. I’ve had the car picked out, price negotiated, literally ready to show up and pick it up and it still takes 3hrs. On the other hand, I’ve managed to buy a house without ever setting foot in it and having a notary come to my house to sign all of the docs in 15min. 🤯

@jasonfried @Tesla 100% I was able to put down a deposit with my credit card and wire the money. Super easy. BUT the tesla wasn't clean & when I need a fix it's a pain in the ass.

@jasonfried @Tesla Exact same experience and thoughts! My favourite is the non-Tesla dealership sales guy writing down numbers and info with a fat sharpie. And then refusing to email those numbers over.

@jasonfried @Tesla most SaaS products still work like that dealership. "book a demo" is just "when can you come in?" in a different font

Same! This last November I bought a car. Sales people were very nice — just running the playbook they were given. I knew the car I wanted, I didn’t care about negotiating a good offer, I wanted to be in and out … still was at the dealer for 5 hours! On a side note — why can’t I start my car with just my phone!? Trying to find a key fob all the time is a challenge.

@jasonfried @Tesla I feel like the car buying and home buying experience is still stuck in the '70s. As you mentioned, Tesla improved it, but for everyone else it's terrible. The same goes for homes, why does it take months, involve so many people, and include so many fees?

@jasonfried @Tesla It’s why peeps like delivrdto.me are making bank right now, their fee is worth not having to deal with the hassle and games. Direct to Consumer car buying can’t come fast enough.
