At 16, Kane Parsons made a 9-minute horror video on his bedroom laptop. Today he turned 21. The film is Backrooms. It opened to $81.4 million domestically in its first weekend, the biggest debut in A24 history, more than tripling their previous record of $25.5 million. It has now grossed $262 million worldwide on a $10 million budget. A24's previous all-time best was $191 million, set by the Timothee Chalamet ping pong film Marty Supreme last year. Backrooms passed that in four days. The record Parsons broke belonged to Josh Trank, who was 27 when Chronicle hit number one in 2012. Before Trank, it was Spielberg, who was 28 when Jaws came out in 1975. Parsons beat both of them by bigger margins than Trank beat Spielberg. Parsons started pirating animation software on his laptop at 11. At 13, he was diagnosed with arthritis and could barely walk at times, so he built 3D worlds in Blender, a free animation program, instead. At 16, he looked at what people were making in the Backrooms niche on YouTube, decided it wasn't good enough, and spent one month building a 9-minute video using Blender, After Effects, and a VCR filter, the kind of grainy tape effect you see on old home videos, to make the computer-generated imagery look real. It now has 83 million views. Studios came calling in 2022. A24 joined the project in February 2023 when Parsons was 17. His parents sat in on those first Zoom calls. He turned down USC and Chapman to take the job. The producing team included Shawn Levy, James Wan, and Jason Blum, whose films collectively include The Conjuring, Insidious, and Get Out. Oscar-nominated actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, who stars in the film, later said he "never struck me as super young" on set. Parsons also co-composed the score. Backrooms is currently the 9th highest-grossing film of 2026. A follow-up is in development.

In 1964, Bruce Lee punched his student Bob Baker backward into a chair from one inch away at the Long Beach International Karate Championships. Baker later said the chest pain kept him home from work for days. This is the training log from that same period, dated May 27, 1965. He was 24. The log lists 14 exercises in a single session. Squats at 95 pounds. French Press (an overhead tricep extension) at 64 pounds, four sets, six reps. Concentration curls (a targeted bicep exercise), wrist curls taken to absolute failure, what the log marks as "INF." Every weight tracked to the pound, every rep count noted. The man writing this weighed 130 pounds. The forearm focus runs through almost every line. His wife Linda called him "a forearm fanatic." Fellow martial artist Bob Wall described Bruce's forearms as like grabbing hold of a baseball bat. This wasn't about aesthetics. Grip strength and wrist stability are what generate striking force, not arm size alone. So he trained forearms harder than almost anything else, every single day. In 1965, weight training was widely seen as counterproductive for martial artists. Added muscle meant slower strikes. Bruce Lee disagreed and built his whole training program to prove the opposite. He ran typically 4 miles on alternating days while changing his speed throughout, cycled 10 miles and skipped rope for 20 minutes on the days in between, and practiced martial arts daily. The weightlifting in this log was in addition to all of that. His body fat during his peak years sat around 5 to 6 percent, a level competitive bodybuilders specifically reach for competition before letting it climb back up in the off-season. He maintained it while training multiple times a day. Seen today, the May 1965 log looks like a well-planned training program. It tracks load, volume, and variation across muscle groups with recovery built into the pattern. This is what strength coaches now call periodized training: a systematic method for building strength without overtraining, changing how hard and how much you train across cycles. Most commercial gyms didn't adopt this framework until the 1980s. He was running it 20 years before anyone gave it a name.
