FACTS ABOUT THE AMAZON
The Amazon Rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world, covering approximately 5.5 million square kilometers (2.1 million square miles).
It stretches across nine countries, with about 60% located in Brazil. The rest extends into Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.
The rainforest is home to an estimated 390 billion individual trees, representing around 16,000 different tree species.
Around 10% of all known species on Earth live in the Amazon, making it one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.
The Amazon River is the largest river in the world by volume of water and one of the two longest rivers, alongside the Nile River.
More than 2.5 million insect species, about 1,300 bird species, over 430 mammal species, and around 3,000 freshwater fish species have been identified in the Amazon.
The Amazon plays a major role in regulating regional and global climate by storing vast amounts of carbon and recycling moisture through its forests.
An estimated 30 million people live in the Amazon region, including hundreds of Indigenous communities, many of whom have lived there for thousands of years.
The Amazon contains countless medicinal plants. Many modern medicines have ingredients originally derived from rainforest plants, and researchers continue to study its biodiversity for new medical discoveries.
Despite its immense size, the Amazon faces significant threats from deforestation, illegal logging, mining, and wildfires, making conservation efforts critical for preserving its ecosystems and biodiversity.
