I thought I understood loss before today. I didn’t. Today made it clear that nothing prepares you for the moment you have to let go for real. Not in thought. Not in words. But in action. In standing there and watching as the world takes someone back. There is a strange kind of clarity that comes with it. Not comfort. Not peace. Just clarity. You see how fragile everything is. How quickly laughter turns into memory. How a person becomes a story you will spend the rest of your life telling. I stood there longer than I needed to. Or maybe not long enough. I don’t know. Time did not behave the way it should. It stretched and folded in ways I could not control. All I know is that today stripped life down to its simplest truth. We are here, and then we are not. And everything in between is all we get. I felt shivers seeing him for the last time.
