Folks, we really have a color and cinematography literacy problem, and it's the fault of bad online critiques and hot takes that know enough to be dangerous. "Films are not colorful anymore". We need to be better at defining what we are critiquing. Perceived saturation or literal saturation? The overall color richness and "look" from what's IN the frame? (costumes, production design, settings, water, grass, red curtains, etc.) or "the photographic look"? (the show LUT, the color densities, color curves, print emulations, contrast, subtractive saturation etc.) We're lumping all that nuance into "This film is muted and has no color!" and it's simply causing egregious critique inaccuracy. It's training folks who don't know any better to espouse things that they don't have any understanding of. Here's an example. Mando and Grogu is photographically muted in its show-LUT, overall grade, and lighting style (from the trailer). The Odyssey IS (from the trailer) photographically rich, but muted in its onscreen color palettes (costumes, design, etc.). Not going to critique either in this post, but both are perfect examples of what folks are wrongfully appropriating in their grievances. Photographic look vs overall look. Photographic color richness vs perceived overall color richness.
