@afrojudaic Timbuktu-Benin City is a little over 1000 miles, Berber traders travelled much farther in much harsher conditions regularly. I'm saying that developing a written language, be it independently, an adaptation or just a copy should not have been so difficult.

@AngloChud08 The closest thing to independent invention of a writing script was Nsibidi which was a proto-script. Inventing your own script is damn neigh impossible, even the Romans and Greeks had to be influenced from near east populations. And no it was pretty far away from Benin

Huts, huts, ridiculous art and more huts. The closest thing to a sub-Saharan 'marvel' is the Benin Wall which measured at approx 16,000km, until you find out that that's including trenches and literal lines in the sand. Sub-Saharan Africa has no history and accomplished nothing.

@afrojudaic Could they not have just invented their own written language? Timbuktu wasn't too far away so it can't have been that difficult to discover the value of writing things down.

@AngloChud08 East Africans who had contact with near east populations had their own writing, other African populations never had that luxury so they never had their own script to record history with. Though a lot of west african kingdoms adopted arabic/ajami.

@afrojudaic It's possible, but I'd say it's unlikely on account of how Brits signed up en masse to risking their lives to put an end to slavery. With the way these "executions" were being carried out I'd say that's just as righteous. If Africa had more written records we'd be more certain.

@afrojudaic In *some* places it was 20m tall, sure. My point is that the 16000km figure is an incredible delusion. For your other point about colonisation being a bad thing, I think destroying a wall as part of a military operation against the hell that was Benin at the time is reasonable.
