Publicly, European leaders describe their support for Ukraine in moral and ideological terms, pitting democracy against authoritarianism.
In some of my closed-door conversations with Europeans, a harder logic is increasingly dominant: It’s about buying time for themselves.
It encourages European governments to judge Ukraine by its willingness and ability to keep fighting to the exclusion of any criticism of the quality of the Ukrainian state.
So long as the front holds, almost everything else becomes easier to rationalize: coercive mobilization, executive overreach, suspended accountability, corruption that remains endemic, incompetence and political dysfunction in Kyiv.
A country can survive militarily while decaying politically.
Europe may not end up with the inspiring postwar democracy it imagines. It could instead inherit a heavily armed, deeply traumatized, politically brittle country on its border—one that is anti-Russian, but not liberal, well-governed or easy to integrate.
Ultimately, the risk is that prolonged war and indulgent external backing produce a state whose pathologies are dangerous in and of themselves.

@Faktencheck2030 "Uns" greift er sowieso nicht an. *Staaten* führen gegen andere Staaten Kriege, wenn sie ihre "vitalen Interessen" verletzt sehen. Ihre Bürger benützen die dabei als Kanonenfutter. Wer als Normalmensch bei der Schlachterei für oder gegen eine Seite Partei nimmt, der spinnt.

Hallo @OleNymoen und @99zueins Pazifisten-Fans. Wie leicht zu erahnen war, wird es nicht so einfach mit dem sein Leben nicht für die Nation geben. Es wurden Begrifflichkeiten für einen Krieg neu interpretiert. Das ist kein Rant gegen diejenigen, die keinen Krieg wollen, sondern gegen die, die meinen einfach so mal verkünden zu können, das Leben nicht für die Nation opfern zu wollen und Repressionen sind kein Thema. Es werden Schüler mit diesem Unfug belehrt, die sich sich dann schnell wundern, wenn sie eingezogen werden. Das @99zueins dieser bürgerlichen Ideologie noch eine Bühne ohne jede Kritik gab, sagt schon alles über die deutsche Linke aus diesem Milieu aus.
