@jp_attwood Check out Snohetta in Norway. They are using biochar in cement. Also if you swap out fossil fuel heat and use pyrolysis and/or gasification instead in cement manufacturing then the embodied carbon goes way down.

(6/9) I can’t see a way to decarbonize cement (8% of global emissions) without CCS. If you do, DM me, because we’re writing about this soon. That only leaves the option to stop using cement, or offset its emissions entirely through #DirectAirCapture. I think both are unlikely.

(1/9) I’ve seen a lot of op-eds about how awful it is that #CCS was included in the #IRA. Most lack nuance, because they haven’t clocked that the #energytransition isn’t just about the power sector anymore. Sorry #energytwitter. So, a 🧵 on why carbon capture still has a place.

My biochar wall tile tapestry: different types and amounts of biochar with different binders. What do you think?

@W_Lucht @vruba That's good to hear. If you need any help on the biochar side, please let me know. Most only focus on its use in soils, but it goes far beyond that these days.

@DarwinFound That is great to hear. I'd love to know more and perhaps feature the story in the International Biochar Initiative's newsletter! I'd love to see it in person too!

Did you know that the #GalápagosVerde2050 program experiments with new technologies for endemic plants restoration in many islands? The GV2050 has started a pilot experiment with biochar.

I usually explain biochar as similar to burnt toast, but after accidentally charring french fries, I'm rethinking that!

@David_of_EcoEra Excellent. But let's not call them 'experiments'! We are well past that after 15,000 peer reviewed publications. Demonstrations and pilots have been on-going for years. It's time for scaling!!

McKinsey & Co endorsing biochar as key carbon removal technology. (Using the wording “experiments”, they are probably underestimating the adoption rate and thereby the 2050 sequestration imo)

Biochar research has increased significantly since 2017 and there are plenty of more recent and extensive studies available such as this: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11… The policy recommendations should be based on up to date research and information. 3/3

😱 Just came across a report by @EcologicBerlin which suggests excluding #biochar from EU Nature Restoration Plan. The report highlights that biochar application to soil can lead to habitat contamination, poses risks to soil health and biodiversity. 1/3 europarl.europa.eu/RegData/etudes…

@LukeChudoba "just"? Scientists have been working on biochar for a few decades now...but yes, indigenous cultures were all over it!

Scientists are just rediscovering Biochar and Terra Preta to enrich the soil. These Scientists don't know anything. I dug thru my Grandpas old Garden and discovered he was a Master of both of the lost techniques of Biochar and Terra Preta. Old European farmers knew more than us.

@FrancesBekele In a coffee producing country like Brazil, they should be looking at coffee husk and parchment as a feedstocks. Its already in one place for the most part and untreated can cause a lot of GHG emissions.

@reldred79 I think in dry conditions it can hold on to moisture and release it more slowly into its surroundings... I'm also reading about incorporating it into concrete, asphalt, mortar, pottery clay, plaster, paint & many more substances, it's pretty endlessly fascinating!
