By far the most unpleasant day to day thing in modernity is the lack of dignity, along with attendant social virtues like decorum, refinement, and cultivation. There was a time in America when that was not the case. When people worked quite hard to refine themselves in the name of establishing a dignified civilization on this new continent. And so despite living in far more challenging and austere conditions than we do, they worked far harder to be genteel and civilized as well. They had exacting standards of speech, dress, public decorum, etc., and worked hard to meet those challenging standards. George Washington wrote himself a short book on good manners as a young g man! Now, on the other hand, to walk along a city street or press through an airport is to stare in the face of slovenliness, decline, and dysgenics.

I completely understand the nostalgia for a past country. But I can't share it. The coming argy-bargy gives me the shivers and I don't want to miss any of it.
