@aviumcaravan I’ll be revisiting Linux again in a similarly spec’d system. But one with 4GB GDDR5 and a slightly newer C2Q. Hopefully this will shed some light on things because after half a day of trouble shooting I was stumped.

keep in mind, this is purely empirical but it does make a huge difference. also if it's regular DDR3 rather than GDDR3 that makes even more of a difference.

hey @Budget_Builds_, i think i figured out why the Linux side of things in the latest video was chugging so hard. the mixture of the memory bus, VRAM type, PCIe and translation layers bottlenecks creates a huge mess that gives inconsistent performance.

@wallacedadmsk05 Seems to be the case, makes you wonder why the scammers made such an effort to scrub off any branding from the card.

@Budget_Builds_ Found your "5090D" on eBay. Just is from a pre-built. Not a custom cooler.

@DeMickyD Nothing beats a bit of Soldout Software and the bundled in copy of Acrobat Reader that had already installed 10x on my old PC.

My first copy of Morrowind was a PCGamer re-release version for 10 quid at the time. I remember the back of the box saying it's a game world with over 500+ hours of content and even as a kid I knew this was a ridiculous claim. Anyway they were 100% right

@ScottECunnO Bargain that. It’s become a bit of a go to for me on most systems 1155 and newer. Systems older than that can be a bit funky with instruction set support but generally anything from the last decade or so runs fantastic on it.

@Budget_Builds_ Please do. I watch you all the time to be fair. I was going to go the Linux route but with it being Nvidia it can be problematic and giving the age of the hardware and what I wanted to do with it windows was the best choice. Only paid £70 for the laptop too.

@Budget_Builds_ hey. Just wanted to say thanks for your content, especially the odd remarks about Windows 11 iot. I've put that to good use with a old MSI Apache that has a i5 4210h 2c/4t CPU and a gtx 960m. It's giving it a new life with 10 coming to eol. So thank you.

Fairly sure it was the HD4890 which I only know because I bought one for £1 years ago. Although I think a lot of that was down to AIB partners wanting the easy sales point of having a “1Ghz GPU”. I don’t even think the Powercolour version I had was ever really cut out for it tbh

@GregSalazarYT I grabbed a 2080 SUPER from a police auction not too long ago. They’ve dropped even further in price since then, and I have to say it’s a lot of card for the money. It’s been a while since I got to choose Ultra settings on virtually everything I open.

Honestly, a sub-$200 RTX 2080 is all the sauce rn...
