A sports specialization study at UCLA found that 88% of NCAA Division I athletes played an average of two to three sports growing up. I spoke with a Sioux Falls athlete and trainer who have seen the direct impacts of the multi-sport experience.

This is COMMON SENSE! Every State should move to this in ALL SPORTS

Behind every state championship banner is a group of kids who learned that mediocrity doesn’t cut it, accountability is earned, and success is shared. Winning is just the byproduct.

Like many others, been saying it for years. Anyone who discourages your child from playing multiple sports does not have your child’s best interests in mind. Period.

Year round single sport specialization benefits the adults who can make money off of it at the expense of the child’s development.

Anyone who discourages an athlete from playing multiple sports does not have that athletes best interests in mind. End of story.

This is one reason why HS distance running is so deep right now. 50-55 mpw for the typical HS boy wasn’t that typical in the 90/00’s.

@CodyTCameron I’m grateful to be at a place where our HC and AD both push for football players to run track. 7 of our 11 starters on defense ran track, the others wrested or played rugby. I’d say it turned out pretty well for those 4x100 guys too🤷🏻‍♂️

The Tempo Confusion Conversation happens every year. “Coach… tempo is supposed to feel easy, right?” “No.” “So… hard?” “Also no.” “So what is it?” “It’s tempo.” “…Coach, that’s not helpful.” Tempo is that awkward middle ground athletes try to turn into something else. Too easy? Wrong. Too hard? Wrong. Just right? They’ll say it felt weird anyway. Tempo feels strange because it sits at the edge of control, not comfort. Tempo isn’t comfortable or brutal. It’s… tempo. And we explain that forever.

Being a high school multi-sport athlete should be encouraged, not discouraged. As a varsity coach, I support players competing in other sports. The problem isn’t multi-sport participation—it’s coaches expecting year-round priority. That’s control, not development.
