The French word for ‘yes’, OUI, was originally a two-word phrase, ‘o il’, that literally meant ‘yes he’ or ‘yes they’. In that sense, it probably comes from an earlier Latin phrase, ‘hoc ille’, that essentially meant ‘this he [did or said]’.
