I motioned tonight at Tampa City Council for a formal resolution condemning the use of the word “retarded.” This was brought upon by recent use of that word repeatedly by figures like President Donald Trump, Elon Musk and others. In the past, figures like Bill Maher, Howard Stern, and the entire cast of the film Tropic Thunder have had an atrocious record on this word and this issue. This is not just about one person, but about the lack of respect and dignity that people with intellectual disabilities and their families have to put up with. And this is about a larger trend in our countrywhere we are celebrating cruelty and intolerance towards not only people with intellectual disabilities, but immigrants, religious minorities, LGBT Americans and so many others. I’m sick of it. And I hope you are too. Recent words used by the president, not only with regards to the disabled but immigrants, and so many other groups, have angered me and frankly should make us all ashamed.  We continue to define deviancy down on what is acceptable. Like I said before, if you use the so-called R Word and make fun of people with intellectual disabilities, regardless of your political affiliation, then you can go right to hell.

Every time the taliban tried to stand toe to toe with the US they lost. They ran, they hid, they cowered behind innocents. I used to feel bad for the non combatants.
