The first THREE tales in my humorous fantasy series for the paltry sum of five magic beans and and a packet of sunflower seeds. Can't say fairer'n that, Guv. amzn.eu/d/93U0zjF

@EngagesBrain @ChrisWhyattTM Plus its tiny screen meant its games that were designed to work on a bigger TV were often unplayable because you couldn’t read the text. It was a cool machine but stupidly expensive and impractical.

A few things about this. Its launch price was today's equivalent of £234, which makes it pretty decent value. Like all color hand-helds back then, it guzzled batteries, so you had to use it sparingly on trips and generally use it plugged in at home. Still loved mine, though.

It's the Game Gear's 35th European anniversary. Sega's color hand-held rolled out this month in 1991, and while it wasn't a huge success (the cheap 'n cheerful Game Boy had already pretty much locked down the portable market), it was still a cool machine with some very fun games.

@ChrisWhyattTM @rebecca5key You've changed your name again! I'm fine, thanks Chris. Well, recovering from catarrh or something. Still revising Alsalda but otherwise concentrating on photos. And how goes it with Dr Griffin? What inspired that name? Another of your crazy characters? Dotty Potty?

@TheArsenalMind For whatever reasons, the players are shattered. It's painfully obvious when watching these last horrendous performances. They are all dead on their feet.

Watching PSG and Bayern makes it clear, Arsenal cannot play slow football against elite teams. The build up has to be sharper, the pressing has to be cleaner and every attack has to carry threat.

@JazRignall I have mixed feelings about Mr Hedgehog. As an avid gamer with my own mail order video game company, I took thousands of orders (partly thanks to my ad in C+VG) on the strength of a huge delivery which never came. Thanks Centresoft, I'll never forget you.

35 years ago, Sega rolled out its initial marketing campaign for its brand new mascot. It was bright and it was bold - and you really couldn't miss it. Sonic went from nobody knowing who he was to being the hottest topic of gaming conversations within just a few weeks.

@sarahs_sky This is one of the reasons I struggle to engage with the Indie community. There's a 'you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours' vibe to it, and I can't be a part of that. I can't promote books I don't think are good and as a consequence I remain an outsider.

This is why we decided that MaT has two rules. 1) we can't DNF, and 2) we're going to be honest. People seem to have this idea that it's somehow virtuous to only be positive. But the thing is, in the consumer market, that stinks to high heaven. If all you ever see is a handful of reviews and they're all positive, it's already going to set off alarm bells. But what's worse is, if someone trusts those reviews, and they pick up a product (book), and it stinks, everyone associated with that product and those glowing reviews now stinks too. It's different if you want to call it a difference of opinion. "Yes, it had those flaws, some even substantial, I just enjoyed it probably" is fine. You're not a critic. You're not a reviewer. You're just a peer consumer. But if you're putting yourself into a place of calling yourself a reviewer or a critic, your credibility relies on you being able to be both negative and positive honestly, and in line with the tenets of good writing.
Abigail Lakewood@Miss_Lakewood

Had an interesting conversation with a fellow reviewer last night and they made really valid points which I totally agree regarding the current status of some literary indie circles: "That's the biggest problem in this space, seems like. It's like a big circle jerk where everyone is buying each other's stuff, instead of doing anything to try to reach a larger audience. But they have no idea that a big part of commercial viability is legitimacy, and legitimacy can't be achieved through pure positivity." The big takeaway from the quote above? "Legitimacy can't be achieved through pure positivity."
