Wow this is surprisingly refreshing from the Democrat Party. It’s common sense, good fiscal policy. NY/NJ heavily subsidize the rest of the country as net tax payers: NJ gets about 60 cents of federal spending for each $1 of income tax paid while WV gets ~$3 for every $1. A dollar doesn’t go as far in New York or New Jersey because we generate the national and international business here. It’s the New York Stock Exchange, not the West Virginia Stock Exchange. These high-cost areas drive the national economy, yet the federal tax brackets treat a $100k earner in Long Island the same as one in Mississippi, even though that money buys 20-30% less here due to housing, childcare, and living costs. More of this, and the Democrats can find their way again.

New Yorkers are desperate for a solution to the affordability crisis. That’s why I’m introducing bipartisan legislation that would require the federal government to tailor income tax brackets to the cost of living in each region of the country. A dollar earned on Long Island simply doesn’t buy what it does in other parts of the country. Our tax code should reflect that reality.
