Congress of the People (COPE) councillor candidate George ‘Papa G’ Ngoetjana has called on the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to up its game and deliver free, fair and credible elections ahead of the highly contested Ward 29 by-election in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, scheduled for 15 October 2025. During today’s Special Political Liaison Committee meeting, organised by the IEC and held in Diepkloof, concerns were raised by a Patriotic Alliance (PA) member regarding irregularities in the voters’ roll. It was discovered that many voters registered to vote in Ward 29 are actually residents of Ward 27. This discrepancy came to light following the IEC’s distribution of the amended voters' roll. “We will be closely monitoring the situation to make sure that only legally registered voters are allowed to vote. There's lots to be desired. This to and fro of accusations plus optics don't augur well for the country. The president should therefore not dilly dally but appoint a commission of enquiry under Justice Moseneke to immediately get to the bottom of this matter and report to parly.
