Ideas in Action: A Global System Under Strain | Insights from Our Latest Researcher Survey Our Fall 2025 survey of more than 12,000 researchers and authors, conducted in partnership with more than 25 organizations, highlights mounting pressure across the global research system, largely driven by evolving U.S. funding and policy dynamics. The results point to clear signals around funding challenges, contracting system capacity, and barriers to global engagement. Findings across both of our surveys also show meaningful shifts in how researchers are approaching their work: where they publish, how they engage, and what they need from the ecosystem around them. For #ScholComm, these perspectives matter. They offer a grounded, evidence-based view into where the system is working, where it isn’t, and what the “new normal” is beginning to look like. We’ve summarized the key findings and what they may signal for the broader community in our latest newsletter:🔗 deltathink.com/what-our-newes… If these dynamics are on your radar, we’d welcome the conversation. Please reach out at info@deltathink.com to get involved in our next survey, stay connected through our newsletter, or explore the full report for a deeper dive. #ScholComm #Research #Funding #AcademicPublishing

ICMYI: #MatchDay2026 Match Day is one of those moments where a complex system meets real life. Each year, the National Residency March Program (NRMP) uses a matching algorithm to pair medical school graduates with residency programs, ideally balancing preferences on both sides. The outcome determines where someone trains, practices, and begins to build their professional life. Early signals from #MatchDay2026 point to familiar pressures: more applicants, driven by US MDs and DOs, intense competition in key specialties, and ongoing strain on training capacity. These are trends the community has been watching closely, with implications that extend well beyond medical education. But the data only goes so far. Behind every match is a person, a pivot point, and a future taking shape. This piece captures that side of the story: medpagetoday.com/popmedicine/po… #MedEd #FutureDoctors #HealthcareWorkforce #ScholComm

🏀 March Madness is what happens when probability meets reality. On paper, the models work. The data is solid. The logic is sound. And then a 12 seed has other plans. You don’t have to follow college basketball to appreciate the dynamic: complex systems, strong signals, and just enough variability to keep things interesting. Sounds a bit like #Science. Enjoy the games and the inevitable surprises! #MarchMadness #Hoops #FridayFun #ScholComm

⚖️ Publishers Sue Anna’s Archive, Alleging Massive Copyright Infringement A coalition of 13 publishers, including @ElsevierConnect, @wileyinresearch, and @WeAreTandF, has filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York against Anna’s Archive, alleging large-scale copyright infringement and seeking a permanent injunction to halt the site’s operations. The compliant states that Anna’s Archive indexes and provides access to tens of millions of books and scholarly articles drawn from other shadow libraries, making them available without authorization. The filing also alleges that the platform has offered bulk access to its collection of copyrighted texts to AI developers, raising additional questions about how shadow-library datasets may be used in training AI systems. ❓ As AI becomes embedded in the research workflow, what does that mean for the publishing systems built around it? @undarkmag looks at how scientific publishing is grappling with generative AI, from journal policies to questions about authorship, transparency, and oversight. The pace of experimentation is high, but the deeper questions for #ScholComm are structural: how should editorial policies evolve, what kinds of disclosure will matter, and where human judgment must remain central. For publishers and societies, the challenge is moving beyond reactive policy toward a clear strategy. Ready to start the conversation? Please reach out today. undark.org/2026/02/25/ai-… #ScholComm #AcademicPublishing #AI

Research integrity isn’t a compliance exercise. It’s foundational to the credibility, sustainability, and future of scholarly communication. The new STM Research Integrity report makes the stakes clear. Expectations are rising. Scrutiny is intensifying. The recommendations are thoughtful and necessary. For #ScholConn here is the reality: ✅ Recommendations don’t operationalize themselves ✅ Policies don’t scale themselves ✅ Priorities don’t execute themselves The real challenge isn’t knowing what to do ... it’s building the governance, workflows, technology alignment, and accountability to actually do it. In this month's Ideas in Action, @LoriCarlin and Meg White unpack what the STM report means and what it really takes to move from aspiration to operational reality. deltathink.com/from-research-… If research integrity a strategic priority for your organization in 2026, let’s talk. We help organizations turn ideas into action.

🛜 Proving What’s Real in an AI World @techreview reports on a new plan from @Microsoft that aims to distinguish authentic content from AI-generated material online. The proposal builds on existing content provenance standards (including C2PA) and centers on technical mechanisms such as watermarking and digital signatures to verify the origin and history of media. Adoption to is voluntary, meaning broader impact will depend on consistent implementation across platforms and workflows. For communities grounded in verification and attribution, like #ScholComm, success will depend on sustained, ecosystem-wide implementation. In environments where credibility underpins discovery, funding, and policy, the ability to establish provenance is mission critical. 🔗 technologyreview.com/2026/02/19/113… #ScholComm #AI #ResearchIntegrity #DigitalTrust

Physician advocacy is back in the spotlight. This recent STAT article highlights the growing expectation that doctors engage not only in clinical care, but also in policy conversations that shape funding, access, and the future of research and healthcare delivery. For those of us in #ScholComm, this resonates. In Delta Think’s global surveys of researcher and authors, conducted in partnership with more than 40 professional organizations and societies, respondents consistently tell us they expect their professional societies to advocate on their behalf—particularly in moments of funding uncertainty and policy change. Advocacy isn’t viewed as optional; it’s part of the value proposition. We’ve just completed analysis of our Fall 2025 Author/Researcher Survey, which takes a deeper look at how shifting U.S. funding and policy dynamics are influencing researcher expectations and behavior. We’ll be sharing selected findings in next month’s Ideas in Action, so be sure to sign up to have this update delivered to your inbox (deltathink.com/blog). Evidence matters, especially when operating conditions are in flux. We look forward to contributing the data needed to inform the community’s next steps. #ResearchFunding #Advocacy #ProfessionalSocieties #ScholarlyCommunication #Collaborating statnews.com/2026/02/24/doc…
