Good Wednesday morning and welcome to July 8th... Charles Dow and Edward Jones were two enterprising reporters who had a business that distributed, by hand, financial tips to stockbrokers in New York's financial district. They decided to create their own newspaper, and, on this date in 1889, published their first issue of what they titled The Wall Street Journal. The first issues were four pages, and cost two cents. The Wall Street Journal grew to be the number one newspaper in circulation in America, and, despite the New York Times' greater online presence, the Journal is still the most widely-circulated newspaper in print. And yes, the publishers were also the creators of the Dow-Jones Index, still used today as a snapshot of the financial markets' health.
