Always thought Liverpool in England had some of the most fascinating place names, Old English such as Anfield (from hanging field), Liverpool itself (Lifer Pōl, the muddy water pool) and then Old Norse names like Croxteth (-steth meaning landing place), Toxteth etc

Pakistani national Sheraz Malik, 28, has been sentenced to an extended 14-year prison term after being convicted of raping an 18-year-old British girl in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. The court heard the vulnerable girl was introduced by a friend to Sheraz Malik and a group of older men in a park. Prosecutors said she was first raped by another member of the group before Malik led her to a secluded area and raped her. DNA evidence linked Malik to the victim.

Update on Tamar (June 30, 2026) In the beginning of this month I told the story of 14-year-old Tamar from the Netherlands, who was hit and killed by an Iraqi asylum seeker (Jamal T.) who had applied for asylum in Germany. He fled the scene after the accident. Today, after years of fighting by her devastated family, the trial finally happened. Agreed. People conflate the UK being unitary with “the institutions are in London so therefore London takes more resources than the rest of the regions” when the institutions are explicitly national. Burke for example lectured to his voters that when elected Bristol’s MP, he would not be a pure delegate to the whims of Bristol. Instead he would govern in the national interest.
