Masjid Al-Aqsa has been shut by Israel since 28 February 2026, in a flagrant violation of the longstanding status quo arrangements. This marks the longest consecutive closure since its occupation in 1967. This closure comes amid an ongoing genocide in Gaza, unprecedented annexation of large areas of the West Bank, growing efforts by Israeli Temple Mount groups to destroy the buildings of Masjid Al-Aqsa, and the seizure of administrative control of the Ibrahimi Mosque in Al-Khalil. Friends of Al-Aqsa strongly condemns the decision by the government, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and the Metropolitan Police to ban the annual Al-Quds Day march. This represents yet another authoritarian step and continues a worrying pattern of silencing voices that challenge government policy, particularly on Palestine. The police have the powers and experience to facilitate peaceful protest, yet have chosen instead to make a political decision to prevent it. The right to assemble and protest is a fundamental principle of any democracy, and attempts to restrict these freedoms must be firmly opposed. Friends of Al-Aqsa will continue to stand against the erosion of civil liberties and the ongoing crackdown on the right to speak out for justice in Palestine.
