Back in January 2021, while working on a report on demography change, I met an activist in Surat who told me the modus operandi on forced religious conversion. The girls would usually be from lower economic strata of society. They would have usually seen their mother being beaten up by their drunk father. These young men would be well groomed, have bikes, cars, clean clothes. They would tell how alcohol is 'haram' in their faith and they will never touch alcohol. Often times, these girls have seen how the only male figure always drunk and beating their mothers, will fall for this because for them, if the guy doesn't drink alcohol, he is good. Here I would like to tell those who would blame women for 'falling into the trap'. These girls do not have that level of social exposure or worldly view to make better judgment calls. They don't need us to blame them, but understand them. Anyway, so these guys would follow, hover around their colleges, then at some point offer lift on their bikes. Girls who had never had a strong male figure often fall for this. They think it is love. Now again, the life they have seen and come from, often times 'no alcohol and beating women' is the highest level in 'niceness' of man. I still don't blame them for falling into the trap. Then these men would express love. Take them to dargah, for 'mannat'. Somehow their faith in dargahs would increase because 'mannat poori hui' and they start drifting from their own faith. They are promised marriage too and often get intimate. When 'marriage' bit happens, these girls don't realise that the nikah requires both the parties to be Muslims. And/or they don't think conversion is a bad thing - because 'at least he won't drink alcohol and beat me'. Yes, bar is that low. You and I may come from a place of privilege but it is not easy for a lot of women. And this is where the conversion and subsequent nikah takes place. Amravati case where the victims were spotted by well groomed young men, reminded me of this shocking truth I came to know.
