Dr. Daniel Hale Williams - first open heart surgery in western society; founded Provident Hospital; created hospital-based training programs for nursing; co-founded the National Medical Association; first Black doctor admitted to American College of Surgeons.

During the 1930s, painter Charles Alston founded the 306 group, which convened in his studio space and provided support and apprenticeship for African American artists, including Langston Hughes; sculptor Augusta Savage; and mixed-media visionary Romare Bearden.

Scientist and mathematician Benjamin Banneker is credited with helping to design the blueprints for Washington, D.C. In 1752 he carved a wooden clock that was so precise it rang every hour on the hour for 40 years.
