St Patty’s Day and Oktoberfest are local holidays?
It’s Just Sad@LSUKBF

@yeongno3 These are local holidays and festivals. I'm guessing they're talking about how it's viewed as taboo to view yourself as an ethnic group with it's own history and identify. "We are [x-group] we did this." Rather a European identify is something gained by being born in Europe.

Despite what the European diaspora may believe, European people celebrate their heritage literally all the time.

@LSUKBF @shinmitsuna_ @yeongno3 Because there isn't one. There's an artificial one that's foisted on us by the upper class that was concocted to rob us of our own histories and cultures. Why are you so desperate to cling to Establishment culture?

@AlexBarnicoat_ I'm all for supporting Ukraine but why are we pledging to help them for 100 years?

The UK has signed a deal to give Ukraine ~£300 BILLION over the next 100 years. I’m not joking… Meanwhile, around 10,000 people die every year from cold homes in the UK - as they can’t afford the heating bill. Why has Keir Starmer done this?

@owl_and_flowers @shinmitsuna_ @yeongno3 Class is both a source of regional distinction and one of a overarching culture. Why do you believe there isn't a larger cultural group that all English regional cultures fall into? All English cultures share common cultural routes.

@LSUKBF @shinmitsuna_ @yeongno3 having a monoculture. Class is why regional cultures endured. It's sad to see working class people buying into the monoculture myth and thinking their identity is so wrapped up in the Establishment that oppressed their ancestors to the point of killing them when they fought back.

@owl_and_flowers @shinmitsuna_ @yeongno3 The English Establishment may influence culture, but it doesn’t define English identity. English culture is a blend of regional traditions but also national history, and shared values. Regional identities are part of a larger cultural framework, not separate from it.

@LSUKBF @shinmitsuna_ @yeongno3 regional ones and failed. The Establishment culture is what the far right champions. Those local festivals usually go back hundreds of years and have more to do with your ancestor's identity than say, the Monarchy.

@FriendlyAnon909 @SayWhatYerLike @IkerGonzalezSa1 @yeongno3 Ethnic nationalism fueled Irish independence by emphasizing distinct cultural, historical, and religious identity. Starting with the "cultural revival" in the 19th century to a belief that the Irish as a distinct people should be a sperate nation would lead to independence.

@SayWhatYerLike @cayce89297 @yeongno3 Yorshiremen saying "God's own country" is more a meme at this point. Scouse not being English is just "I'm not like other girls". Cornish is different though, I'll give you that however Cornish nationalists are extremely small in number.

@LSUKBF @cayce89297 @yeongno3 Never heard of Yorkshire being gods country? Scouse not English? The Cornish independence campaign? England never has, never will be united in a shared culture as you'd like to believe

@SayWhatYerLike @IkerGonzalezSa1 @yeongno3 No English culture isn't being supressed. I don't think that's the argument from the Americans either. I think it's more an idea of watering down on what it means to be English or any nationality in order to facilitate diversity.

@LSUKBF @IkerGonzalezSa1 @yeongno3 Think you misunderstood, English culture is alive and kicking in England and isn't being suppressed. From cricket, to rugby , to darts, to county festivals and shows, from royal pomp, to traditional events. Just like in Scotland, Wales or Ireland

@SayWhatYerLike @cayce89297 @yeongno3 I'm not sure what the argument is here. Because their are regional differences there is no united national identify and shared culture? Only the most obnoxious Yorkshireman would try to argue that he is so distinct from the rest of England as to be though of as another nation.

@LSUKBF @cayce89297 @yeongno3 Each region of each country have their own identity and reject national identity (to some degree) The basques, Scouse not English, Yorkshire, Bavarians, try telling northern Italians they are the same as Sicilians, or Parisians same as those from Marseille

@SayWhatYerLike @IkerGonzalezSa1 @yeongno3 Ethnic nationalism led to Irish independence. The Welsh promote their language and do other things to maintain a difference to the English. A key aspect of Scots cultural heritage is their relation to the English.

@JoeMacD04736237 @shinmitsuna_ @yeongno3 I'm not from Scotland no however you've chosen a country I know a lot about. However everything you've said is true of any region. I'm not sure what you're trying to say. Are you trying to argue that there is a Scottish cultural identity or that Scotland is just a region?

@Charlitros22 @IkerGonzalezSa1 @yeongno3 You'd have to expand further. Many ethnicities express themselves through their food. I believe the American perceptive is one where they believe that individual European ethnicities are discouraged from seeing themselves as a people but rather as citizens of nations.

@LSUKBF @IkerGonzalezSa1 @yeongno3 Spaniards are absolutely encouraged to be proud of our ethnicity. But as it's based on food (yes, really) and not Roman statues, American fascists don't think it counts.
