Governments have missed another opportunity to reform a broken system that robs girls of their education. When countries spend three times more on debt than on schooling, they squeeze the services that girls rely on most. The G20 has finally acknowledged what millions of girls have long known, but it is time for action. Now is the worst time to turn our backs on women and girls. We urge @10DowningStreet and @UKGov to restore support for girls’ education, and work toward ending aid dependency by fixing the global financial system, especially when it comes to unsustainable debt.

Severing these lifelines will force millions of girls out of school. It will undermine the health and safety of the most vulnerable mothers and children in the world. The world is one step closer to recognising gender apartheid under international law — and holding the Taliban accountable for their crimes against Afghan women & girls. I am grateful to the courageous activists who demanded justice and the governments that advanced this treaty.

At the UN General Assembly in September, @Malala joined girls to call on leaders to step up and help shape a more equitable future. This week at the #G20summit, leaders laid out some promising steps to help realise that goal. They made commitments to tackle global hunger, increase access to development and climate finance and advance equitable education. But with 3.3 billion people living in countries that spend more on debt interest payments than on education or health, the growing debt crisis in lower-income countries stands in the way of achieving these goals. We need world leaders to prioritise debt relief efforts and free up resources for countries to invest in girls' education and create pathways to a more equitable future.

🧯 US EMBASSY PAINTED ORANGE AS WE REJECT FASCISM This morning the world wakes to find it has slipped further into fascism as well as climate breakdown. Trump's win puts the lives of ordinary people at risk, everywhere. Political systems that can be bought by big oil have no value as we face the biggest challenge of our time. The only real winner of today’s election is the corporate power that controls the major parties in both the US and UK. They continue to ensure the interests of the fossil fuel industry will continue to be prioritised over the wellbeing of ordinary people. It is only through people coming together to disrupt business-as-usual that humanity will stand any chance of minimising the effects of climate breakdown, and the social collapse that follows. In Spain this week, hundreds of bodies continue to be dragged from the mud – this is just a small portent of what is to come if we don’t change course immediately. As long as democracy is hijacked by corporate interests and billionaires, it will fail to deliver the change people are crying out for. This will always leave the door open for fake populists like Trump to exploit the disaffection many feel. It’s time for ordinary people to step up, organise and make change happen, because it should be clear by now, no political leaders are coming to save us. Just Stop Oil.
