Governments have missed another opportunity to reform a broken system that robs girls of their education. When countries spend three times more on debt than on schooling, they squeeze the services that girls rely on most.
The G20 has finally acknowledged what millions of girls have long known, but it is time for action. I am calling on world leaders to take debt reform seriously – end the vicious cycle that keeps so many countries trapped in debt and protect education budgets, so every girl gets the education she deserves.

Now is the worst time to turn our backs on women and girls. We urge @10DowningStreet and @UKGov to restore support for girls’ education, and work toward ending aid dependency by fixing the global financial system, especially when it comes to unsustainable debt.

Severing these lifelines will force millions of girls out of school. It will undermine the health and safety of the most vulnerable mothers and children in the world. It will worsen the harms of climate disasters and armed conflict, and drive up forced displacement and migration. @CommonsForeign: this attack on girls’ rights will have devastating impacts on all of us.

The U.K. government’s proposal to scrap education and gender-equality aid budgets will deprive lower-income countries of essential funding for girls’ schooling, maternal health and preventing violence against women. @FCDOGovUK: this rollback would erase years of hard-won progress on girls’ rights.

The debt crisis is failing the next generation of girls.
Over 40% of developing countries spend more on debt repayments than education, health care and social protection combined. Unless the international community changes course, it will undermine global progress on gender equality, development and economic resilience in the coming years.
In a piece published in collaboration with @wef, @LuceFry and @NaomiNyamweya_ share the impacts of the debt crisis on girls — and five reforms to the G20 Common Framework needed to unlock resources for girls’ education at mala.la/wef

In 2024, the 10 countries with the greatest barriers to girls’ education spent four times more on debt repayments than on education.
Let that sink in.
In Malala Fund’s new policy brief, we highlight the consequences of the debt crises on girls’ lives — and urge G20 leaders to unlock resources for their education through debt reform. Read it mala.la/G20-X ↩️

The impact of the USAID funding pause and changes is a huge concern, says Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai.

Many lower-income countries spend more on repaying debt than public services. This prevents them from investing in education — & girls’ futures.

45,000+ women are killed each year by those they trust most, and 1 in 3 women face violence in their lifetime.
But hope shines through. This year, powerful movements—marches, protests, and strikes—have shown that change is possible.
Now is the time to act:
𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗢𝘂𝘁: Too many women suffer in silence.
𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Demand justice. End impunity.
𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆: Shame belongs to perpetrators, not survivors.
🎥 Watch. Share. Speak out. Together, we can build a safer, more just world.

The world is one step closer to recognising gender apartheid under international law — and holding the Taliban accountable for their crimes against Afghan women & girls. I am grateful to the courageous activists who demanded justice and the governments that advanced this treaty.

The Sixth Committee, which is the U.N. General Assembly's primary forum for proposed changes to international law, met this week and advanced treaty negotiations on crimes against humanity. Malala Fund's statement on this important decision below.

At the UN General Assembly in September, @Malala joined girls to call on leaders to step up and help shape a more equitable future. This week at the #G20summit, leaders laid out some promising steps to help realise that goal. They made commitments to tackle global hunger, increase access to development and climate finance and advance equitable education.
But with 3.3 billion people living in countries that spend more on debt interest payments than on education or health, the growing debt crisis in lower-income countries stands in the way of achieving these goals.
We need world leaders to prioritise debt relief efforts and free up resources for countries to invest in girls' education and create pathways to a more equitable future.

Many feminists are raised by loving, present fathers. Dead this myth 🚮
#FATHERHOOD 🇿🇦@Mpu2mi
@somuhleomuhle Men love women who were raised by a father because they're unlikely to be feminists. Understand boundaries. Respect themselves. For their character.

🧯 US EMBASSY PAINTED ORANGE AS WE REJECT FASCISM
This morning the world wakes to find it has slipped further into fascism as well as climate breakdown. Trump's win puts the lives of ordinary people at risk, everywhere.
Political systems that can be bought by big oil have no value as we face the biggest challenge of our time.
The only real winner of today’s election is the corporate power that controls the major parties in both the US and UK. They continue to ensure the interests of the fossil fuel industry will continue to be prioritised over the wellbeing of ordinary people.
It is only through people coming together to disrupt business-as-usual that humanity will stand any chance of minimising the effects of climate breakdown, and the social collapse that follows. In Spain this week, hundreds of bodies continue to be dragged from the mud – this is just a small portent of what is to come if we don’t change course immediately.
As long as democracy is hijacked by corporate interests and billionaires, it will fail to deliver the change people are crying out for. This will always leave the door open for fake populists like Trump to exploit the disaffection many feel.
It’s time for ordinary people to step up, organise and make change happen, because it should be clear by now, no political leaders are coming to save us. Just Stop Oil.
