1990 McLaren MP4/5B Test Monza Ayrton Senna and the McLaren High-nose MP4/5B In 1990 Tyrrell introduced a high nose design that stunned the F1 world - other teams took notice, including McLaren, who tested their own version of a high nose MP4-5B. The Honda McLaren Marlboro team turned up to a test at Monza with a radical new front end for the MP4/5B. The car featured a raised nose section, similar to that of the revolutionary Tyrrell 019, although the modified McLaren does not have anhedral front wings, but rather a conventional horizontal wing, with large, deep, front wing endplates. The test of the high nose MP4/5B was part of the ongoing improvement programme for the McLaren chassis, which has proved difficult on occasion during the season. Both Gerhard Berger and Ayrton Senna were present during the three day test, with the Austrian in action on all days, switching between different versions of the standard MP4/5B. Senna ran the high nose configuration for just 10 laps on the third day (Aug 2) of the test. If one blinks, he would have missed it. The car looked the same in Marlboro / Shell livery, except for a strangely shaped front wing. The car retains the same monocoque as the standard race cars, but with a new nose box an bodywork. The tip of the nose was about 25cm above the ground and the front wings were incredibly high, as if it were trying to create a kind of tunnel under the wing. Unfortunately, this nose didn't work. According to people who were on the team, the high nose wasn't significantly better than the standard nose; although you have to take into consideration that other parts of the car were not designed with a high nose in mind, so even if it had any effect, it must have been very limited. 📷 @McLarenF1 #f1 #senna #cars
