Magnus Carlsen had 2 tough days in Hong Kong. He lost 4 games in a row. This is not something we are used to seeing with Magnus. He usually bounces back after one or two losses!
But while he was going through this slump in form, we were observing something in the playing hall. The moment the pairings would come up, people would rush and find a spot around Magnus' board.
Just being able to see Magnus in action at close quarters was a big joy for almost all the chess fans! There were many strong players in the room and there were many world class GMs, yet majority of the people chose to stand around Magnus' game.
In some ways if you think about it, it is like seeing someone like Beethoven composing his music or Leonarda Da Vinci doing this painting. To be able to witness it LIVE is to later be able to brag that I saw the best in action.
The chess world and the chess ecosystem is powered in a huge way by Magnus Carlsen's presence at the current moment. This is not to say that a new name will not rise soon. It will. But we also have to be grateful about what the man provides. The number of eyeballs he brings to chess and the way he popularizes the sport. All the best Magnus. We hope that you make a strong comeback!
