RIP Sam Kieth. I’ve never met him, but he was a huge inspiration to me all the way back to his short stories in I before E, his attention to detail on top of his wacky proportions was so dynamic and fun and completely different than anything else out there. he made me want to do my own anthologies with short stories. I did a lot of those before Invincible. Someday I’ll do more. Here’s the only piece of art I own from Sam, it’s hanging up in my home, a pin-up he did for I before E, which I thought was one of the coolest ideas, illustrations with short stories written and drawn by Sam. Amazing.

Aw yes. Almost forgot about this. A piece I did for a Wizard Magazine contest. Always a fan of Sam Kieth.

Fun fact: Sam Kieth's cousin is David Feiss, creator of Cow and Chicken. Kieth co-wrote C&C's pilot & Feiss drew cartoony interludes for The Maxx (issues #5 & #30).

Sam Kieth’s cover to DARKER IMAGE #1! Darker Image #1 was designed to showcase the debut of 3 new characters in 3 separate stories by Jim Lee, myself and Sam Kieth. It was your first introduction to Deathblow, Bloodwulf and The Maxx. Jim and I were excited to share the stage with Sam as we were tremendous fans of all the he had done at Marvel & DC. Sam was game to join our little showcase and he provided such a stunning cover that neither Jim or I figured we needed to offer variants of our own. This was Sam’s official debut with Image. Jim and I would almost always have covers for #1 issues that we participated in but once I saw Sam’s and Jim saw it, we figured that we didn’t need to contribute. This was more than enough. Darker Image #1 debuted in Jan. 1993 a whopping 1 million copies. With one single cover by Sam. It’s a great book and the fun we each had jumps out from every story. Proud to have shared this experience. Why no Darker Image #2 you ask? Because audience reaction to each character was so positive that each received his own series as a result. Fun, fun memories. Rest In Peace, Sam Kieth!

Sam Kieth was not just a comic book rockstar artist, he was a kind and patient man. RIP. I met Sam Kieth one time and it affected me greatly. When I was thirteen I heard he was coming to do a store signing at the Mall in Salt Lake.
