MCP OAuth is still tough to debug in 2026. We wrote an article with our friends at @scalekitinc taking a look at some of the tools in 2026 to help with MCP OAuth. Though the OAuth spec stabilized, it didn’t make OAuth easy to implement and debug. The spec came in multiple shapes (CIMD & DCR) and developers were using different versions of the OAuth spec. Working with OAuth implementors, we saw the same bugs come up over and over: 1️⃣Incorrect `WWW-Authenticate` header: Client never starts OAuth flow and can’t find the resources. 2️⃣Redirect URI mismatches: Subtle mismatch of URLs until you look closely and find trailing slash, encoding differences, port mismatch 3️⃣PKCE / Code Exchange Issues: Authorization step succeeds, but token step fails. Binding is incorrect, or challenge is computed incorrectly. 4️⃣Scopes that don’t work: Auth server and MCP server handle use different formats (`org:write` vs `orgs:write`) MCPJam and Scalekit have built great tools for devs wanting to debug OAuth. Scalekit provides a simple way to set up an authorization server and plug in drop-in directly in code.
