♟️ History of the Candidates: from Budapest (1950) to Cyprus (2026). 🔸 Toronto 2024 – Triumphs by Gukesh D and Tan Zhongyi Toronto hosted a historic double-header: the first time the FIDE Candidates Tournament and FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament were held concurrently, and the first Candidates event on North American soil. The Open event remained fiercely contested until the final round. Heading into round 14, Gukesh D led with 8.5/13 – a half-point ahead of pre-tournament favorites Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, and Ian Nepomniachtchi, who were tied for second. Nakamura and Gukesh drew a tense encounter, while Caruana, despite achieving a winning position against Nepomniachtchi, was held to a draw by stubborn defense. With these results, Gukesh became the youngest-ever winner of the Candidates Tournament and went on to become the youngest World Champion in the history of chess. Tan Zhongyi convincingly won the Women’s Candidates with an excellent 9.5/14, finishing 1.5 points ahead of runner-up Humpy Koneru, and earned the right to challenge reigning Women’s World Champion Ju Wenjun.
