When recruits arrive, many fail not because they’re weak, but because they’re overwhelmed by the idea of making it through the entire week of brutal challenges known as Hell Week. O’Neill says the secret isn’t thinking about the finish line. It’s thinking smaller. Don’t focus on surviving the whole week. Just make it to the next meal. Then the next one. Then the next evolution. Then the next sunrise. Break the impossible into small wins, and suddenly the impossible becomes manageable. The same idea works outside the military too: when life feels overwhelming, stop worrying about the entire mountain. Just take the next step.
