A fun and productive day at @cammakespace yesterday. Got the @ProjectFabMX extruder mounted to something that's starting to look like a printer... metal! 🤘 Lots of bugs found 🐛, some squashed, some turned to chrysalis awaiting more fervent attention 🦋

I received a nice surprise in the post today, the parts for the @ProjectFabMX extruder and a little bit of PolyMIM to play with! Thanks FabMX you can be sure we'll put this to good use at @cammakespace and I look forward to showing you a fully assembled extruder very soon 🚀

Off to @cammakespace for their Birthday Party, congratulations on 12 years! 🥳 As I bet people there will want to talk about metal printing, here's my latest #FreeCAD of the printer for the @ProjectFabMX extruder. The purple area is the build volume - making sense yet...? 🙃

I persisted with #FreeCAD and now I am starting to get it! Started mocking up my idea for a @ProjectFabMX printer - take a @VoronDesign 2.4 frame, mount a bunch of Annex K3 thingys to it, and use them to sling a @Prusa3D Mini bed 🙃 Thanks for the tips @concreted0g!

@BuddyloveDurand Only one. We get away with this because we have a special profile in our barrel to get the right temperature distribution. It's less flexible but also simpler+cheaper.

@ProjectFabMX There is also one thing that is very important: the number of heating points on your sheath! How many do you have?

@BuddyloveDurand Interesting. What kind of extruder do you have?

@ProjectFabMX yes, but I have screws with a diameter of 12 and they all have grids at the end of the screw!!

You like printing steel, right? 🤓🛠️ This is one of the most exciting DIY projects right now. @cammakespace can you spare a little corner to give this hardware a home at Christmas time? 🥺 (oh, and lets have a filament recycling setup while we are at it... 💸)

We have released version 3.1 of our pellet extruder for MIM feedstock! See details on our wiki: wiki.fablab-muenchen.de/display/FABMX/…

@open_erv Consistent flow is always an issue with pellet extruders. But the simple extruder design we have is good enough for the MIM feedstock application. The parts we produce with PolyMIM have no visible defects due to inconsistent flow

@ProjectFabMX It's consistent flow? I would have tried to liquefy the plastic then pump it with a gear pump or something. It would get residue and have to be cleaned every once in a while... But could be very good flow control?

@BuddyloveDurand Ah OK. Does this really have a noticeable effect? The screw turns really slowly, like 10 rpm

@ProjectFabMX yes when the material is advanced by Archimedes screw it advances with a certain rotation due to the rotation of the screw

@ProjectFabMX a grid does not stop the flow but stops its gyroscopic effect as it advances.

@BuddyloveDurand I don't speak French, but if I can trust automatic translation you suggest a valve to cut off material flow, right? Yes, that would be a nice feature, but it is not so easy to implement I think and would make the extruder even larger

@ProjectFabMX COOL? Mais j'aurai mis une grille en bout de vis pour casser le flux

You add a NEMA23+gearbox and some smaller parts, and you have a working extruder! Anyone interested? Please join our discord to discuss the details. See fabmx.org for discord link.

And we are looking for beta testers! We will be able to provide barrel, extruder screw and laser cut metal cage for around 150 Euros (plus taxes, shipping, and if outside EU, possibly customs fees). These are the most important parts on the BOM (see link above).
